Two suspects are in custody following the shooting of a U.S. Park Police officer in southeast Washington, D.C., in an incident that remains under active investigation by multiple agencies.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the suspects as Darren Foster, 21, and Asheile Foster, 22, both from southeast D.C. Darren Foster was arrested shortly after the shooting on Monday evening, while Asheile Foster was taken into custody the following day. Both face charges of assault on a federal police officer with a firearm.
The shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. as the officer was investigating an incident while seated in an unmarked Tesla vehicle. According to authorities, two armed individuals approached the vehicle and opened fire, striking the officer in the upper body.
Despite being wounded, the officer was able to drive away from the scene. He was later transported by a U.S. Park Police aviation unit to a nearby hospital. Officials confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening, and the officer has since been released.
Investigators are examining whether the suspects were aware they were targeting a law enforcement officer. Preliminary information suggests they may have known the identity of the individual inside the vehicle, though no motive has been publicly established.
Law enforcement activity intensified Tuesday afternoon when authorities executed a raid at a residence near the location of the shooting. Officers entered the home with weapons drawn, supported by a K-9 unit.
The case is being handled by the Metropolitan Police Department’s NIBIN Investigations Unit, working in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and U.S. Park Police detectives. The use of NIBIN indicates a focus on tracing ballistic evidence and identifying any links to other firearm-related incidents.
No additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting or the relationship between the suspects and the officer have been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
