The State Department is preparing to launch a new expedited visa service that will allow certain foreign travelers to secure interview appointments at U.S. embassies and consulates within days—provided they are willing to pay a hefty premium.
Under a pilot program scheduled to begin July 1, applicants seeking tourist and business visas will be able to pay an additional $750 fee on top of the standard $185 visa application charge in exchange for faster access to interview appointments, according to a notice expected to appear in the Federal Register.
The new service is designed to guarantee an interview appointment within 10 days of payment at participating U.S. embassies and consulates.
The pilot program is currently scheduled to run through Dec. 31, though officials could extend it if demand proves strong.
State Department officials have not yet released the list of embassies and consulates that will participate in the program. That information is expected to be announced before the July 1 launch date.
The initiative comes as the Trump administration continues implementing broader changes to immigration enforcement, visa screening, and compliance procedures.
In recent months, federal officials have expanded several security measures intended to reduce visa overstays and strengthen vetting standards. Among the changes are requirements that applicants from certain countries post bonds of up to $15,000 and provide extensive personal background information, including years of social media activity and other identifying details.
Supporters of the measures argue that they help improve national security and ensure compliance with immigration laws. Critics contend the additional requirements have complicated an already lengthy visa process and contributed to growing backlogs at some diplomatic posts.
For many travelers, interview wait times have become a significant obstacle. In some countries that are not part of the Visa Waiver Program, applicants can face waits of several months before securing an interview appointment. Business travelers, tourists, and others seeking temporary entry to the United States have frequently complained that delays can disrupt travel plans and economic activity.
The new premium option is intended to provide a faster alternative for those willing to pay the additional cost.
Importantly, the expedited service does not provide any guarantee that a visa application will ultimately be approved. Applicants will still be required to complete the normal screening process and satisfy all eligibility requirements. The fee only guarantees accelerated access to an interview appointment.
Whether the new visa service becomes a permanent feature will likely depend on participation levels and whether it successfully reduces pressure on existing appointment systems.
