On Sunday, a Texas preacher hoisted the American flag to full-staff at a post office, defying President Trump’s order to lower it for country star Dolly Parton. David Grisham acted at the Borger Post Office in the Texas Panhandle after the President issued a directive for flags to fly at half-staff.
President Trump ordered US flags at federal buildings to fly at half-staff through sunset on Sept. 1 to honor Parton following her death at age 80. Grisham climbed the pole and pulled the flag up to the top mast instead. He posted a video of the act to Facebook where he explained his reasoning to the public. Grisham stated that Parton “never served in the United States government in any capacity officially,” according to reports. He argued that lowering the flag is reserved for those who have served the nation in an official role.
Grisham told reporters that “I don’t think this is an appropriate way to honor her.” He believes the government should not honor a country western star when many troops do not receive such a tribute. This specific protest is not an isolated event in the state. Ken Adams, the Republican mayor of Olive Branch in Mississippi, also refused to lower the American flag following Parton’s death.
Mayor Adams wrote on the city’s Facebook page that “I believe lowering the American flag to half-staff should mean something very significant.” He feels the honor should be reserved for military heroes, fallen first responders, and presidents. Adams cited Mississippi’s Home Rule law to justify his decision to ignore the federal order. This law gives cities the authority to manage their own internal affairs. The mayor said leaders should “use our own judgment when appropriate” for their constituents.
David Grisham has a history of staging controversial protests that often clash with local norms. In November 2023, he stood outside a school in Amarillo dressed as the Grinch with a sign about Santa. His actions often draw attention to his strict views on what he considers right or wrong. The New York Post noted that he has staged outlandish protests before this recent flag incident. His approach is direct and often confrontational regarding government symbols.
The President’s order remains in effect at most federal sites across the country until the sun sets on September 1.
