Former President Joe Biden made a rare public appearance Thursday at the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, but one unscripted moment near the end of the ceremony quickly became the focus of online discussion.
As the event concluded and music played, former President Barack Obama exited the stage, followed by former First Lady Michelle Obama and other attendees. Biden remained standing alone for several moments, waving to the crowd while those around him appeared to move on from the ceremony.
Video circulating on social media showed Biden lingering near the podium before removing his sunglasses and looking out toward the audience.
“Where’s my granddaughter?” Biden could be heard calling out.
The footage then showed him beginning to move away from the stage before the video ended.
The brief moment immediately sparked commentary from both supporters and critics. For some observers, it recalled episodes from Biden’s presidency that generated concerns about his age and public appearances. Others argued the clip captured only a small portion of a larger event and lacked context about what was happening off-camera.
Biden’s appearance at the ceremony was notable because public appearances have become less frequent since he left office. The former president is currently battling prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, a diagnosis that has prompted an outpouring of concern and well wishes from political figures across the spectrum.
Despite the awkward moment at the conclusion of the event, Biden received warm recognition during the ceremony itself. Obama took time during his remarks to acknowledge his former vice president and longtime political partner.
“Thank you to your steadfast partnership for eight years,” Obama said. “Joe, we started as running mates, and ended as family. And we would not be here without you, and we are grateful.”
The event brought together a remarkable gathering of political figures, including former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Biden, along with their spouses. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also attended the celebration marking the opening of the presidential center.
Biden’s post-presidential years have unfolded against the backdrop of continuing debate within the Democratic Party about the 2024 election and his decision to seek another term. Some prominent Democrats have argued that stepping aside earlier might have created a more competitive primary process.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently addressed that question during an interview with The New Yorker.
“He made a terrible mistake,” Clinton said. “He made a terrible mistake for himself, his legacy, and for the country.”
She added that she believes a contested Democratic primary might have produced a nominee capable of defeating Donald Trump.
Former First Lady Jill Biden has also reflected publicly on the decision, saying she wishes her husband had not pursued another campaign and acknowledging concerns she experienced during his difficult debate performance in 2024.
