If recent political history is any guide, Democrats in Maine are hoping a late candidate swap can generate momentum heading into November. Whether it will produce a different outcome remains an open question.
Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson officially became the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate over the weekend after delegates selected him to replace Graham Platner, who withdrew from the race following multiple allegations of sexual abuse. Platner has denied the allegations.
Jackson’s nomination came without a primary election. Instead, the Maine Democratic Party convened delegates to choose a replacement before the state’s deadline for certifying candidates.

The unusual process has drawn comparisons to Vice President Kamala Harris’ entry into the 2024 presidential race after President Joe Biden ended his campaign. In both cases, the replacement candidate entered the race without competing in a primary, prompting critics to question how the nominations were decided.
Jackson entered Saturday’s meeting as the overwhelming favorite to receive the nomination. As former president of the Maine Senate and a well-known figure within the state’s Democratic Party, he enjoyed broad support among party leadership before delegates formally selected him.
Party officials described the convention as a demonstration of the party’s internal democratic process, with delegates exercising their authority to choose a replacement nominee after Platner’s withdrawal.
The convention also included a land acknowledgment recognizing the Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot nations before the nomination proceedings.

Jackson now faces the challenge of uniting Democrats after a turbulent campaign season that has already been marked by controversy.
Before Platner exited the race, Jackson had publicly endorsed him and campaigned alongside him. According to Politico, Jackson continued supporting Platner through several earlier controversies before distancing himself after a woman alleged Platner had sexually assaulted her.
Jackson later said Platner had “lied to me” and told reporters he had not spoken with him since the allegations became public.
The nomination also brings renewed attention to Jackson’s own political history.
Republican groups have highlighted past reports describing Jackson’s temper, including a 2021 incident in which he threw a water bottle during an argument with a fellow Democratic lawmaker.

Asked about those criticisms, Jackson acknowledged that his conduct has not always been perfect.
“Anyone that I may have argued with, that I might have went too far or got too passionate, I apologize to,” he told reporters.
Republicans have wasted little time making Jackson’s background part of their campaign messaging.
Chris Gustafson, communications director for the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican-aligned super PAC, criticized Democrats’ handling of the nomination process following Jackson’s selection.

“Chuck Schumer forcefully removed Graham Platner from the ballot against the will of Maine voters, only to replace him with a deranged and scandal-plagued political insider,” Gustafson said in a statement.
Democrats, meanwhile, are focused on moving past the turmoil surrounding Platner’s candidacy and turning their attention to the general election.
With the candidate replacement now complete, Jackson has only a few months to introduce himself to voters as the party’s nominee while addressing questions surrounding both the nomination process and his own political record.
