Hello everyone! The 2024 election season has been full of surprises, but none quite as shocking as President Joe Biden stepping down from the Democratic nomination.
What’s crazy is that there’s sort of some bragging going around over how it was down. MSNBC host Alex Wagner explained what took place during an appearance on Colbert’s late night show.
Stephen Colbert was curious about the behind-the-scenes drama that led to Biden’s unexpected decision to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. With the Democratic National Convention just around the corner, Colbert wanted to know what went down in those mysterious backrooms of political power.
Wagner, who’s not just a news host but also connected to the Obamas through her husband, seemed a bit flustered by the line of questioning. Colbert, kept pressing her for details. He wanted to know who was really behind Biden’s decision to step aside. Was it Obama? Clinton? Or maybe some shadowy “inner sanctum” of Democratic elites?
Wagner’s response was both vague and frightening. She hinted that there were powerful people working behind the scenes to convince Biden to relinquish the nomination, but she didn’t spill any specific names. “There is an inner sanctum of Democratic politics where a lot of powerful people are trying to take credit for this,” she admitted, but she also noted that these folks aren’t eager to talk about it publicly.
According to Wagner, the reason for all this secrecy might be to protect Biden from the harsh reality that many wanted him out before he was ready. Yet, she emphasized that, in the end, it was Biden himself who made the final call to step down.
Sure, after Pelosi threatened him with the 25th Amendment and who knows what they said about Hunter’s cases or Biden’s transcripts that are under lock and key.
Wagner then shifted gears, expressing confidence that Biden will deliver a powerful speech at the convention, showing the country that he’s still “Joe Biden” with a capital “B.” She suggested that while it might have been hard for Biden to see Harris gain so much momentum, his decision ultimately paved the way for her success.
Folks, this is a scary soft brag.
One other thing to notice.
This is the second high-profile reporter that Colbert has interviewed lately. In the past, late night TV were wind down shows were rock stars, celebrities, and comedians would be guests. Notice how media personalities are now trying to put themselves in the celebrity status.
Later, Colbert asks about 2020 vs 2024 Harris and Wagner replies “she has clearly gained a lot of confidence as the vice president and I see that most acutely, most tangibly in her joy…the American public is okay with seeing a woman smile.” pic.twitter.com/TS2AK02XtX
