According to the Washington Examiner, the National Capital Planning Commission gave the project preliminary approval. This is a huge step forward for a project that has faced early hurdles. The arch will stand on a traffic circle near the Virginia end of Memorial Bridge. It is meant to be a lasting symbol of our strength.
Chairman Will Scharf defends the project with clear conviction. He stated, “This is a complex project,” but he sees the bigger picture. Scharf believes the structure is a proper way to celebrate our past. “I think commemorating America’s 250th anniversary is important,” he said. “I think that the proposed arch is a fitting commemoration of 250 years.”
Respect for Our Fallen Heroes
Not everyone is happy about this plan, and their concerns are loud. Critics argue the arch is too tall and will block views of the Lincoln Memorial. More importantly, some fear it will disrupt the peace at Arlington National Cemetery. They worry construction noise will disturb the quiet rest of our soldiers.
Linsay Burnett, a combat photographer, spoke out against the noise during a recent hearing. She described a disturbing scene where families would bury loved ones to the sound of pile drivers. “Under this plan, families would lower their loved ones into the ground to the sound of pile drivers,” she said. “Taps against a concrete pump. We ask our dead for everything. The least we owe them is silence, and for three years we would deny them even that.”
Staff at the planning commission suggested changes to lower the arch height. They wanted to follow the Height of Buildings Act strictly. However, Chairman Scharf overruled that advice. He plans to consult the Interior Department instead. This shows a willingness to push through for the right vision.
