The political fallout surrounding former Rep. Eric Swalwell has intensified rapidly, as a series of serious allegations and public reactions continue to unfold in quick succession.
President Trump, speaking to the Daily Mail, offered a blunt assessment when asked about the accusations. “He’s a sleazebag. Always has been,” Trump said, adding that while he was not familiar with the specific charges, he viewed Swalwell as “a bad guy” and a “corrupt politician.”
Pressed further on the growing number of allegations, the president stopped short of detailed commentary, instead stating, “We’ll see what happens… Let him go defend himself.”
Those remarks come as multiple accusations against Swalwell have surfaced, forming the basis of both public controversy and active investigations. Five women have now come forward with claims ranging from sexual misconduct to rape, with some allegations dating back several years.
Among them is Lonna Drewes, who has accused the former congressman of a violent assault in 2018. She alleges that what began as a professional relationship connected to her fashion software venture escalated into an encounter in a West Hollywood hotel room where, she claims, her drink was tampered with before she was choked and assaulted.
Drewes has provided materials to investigators, including text messages, photographs, and personal journal entries, which she says support her account. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has since opened an investigation into her claims.
Separately, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has launched another criminal probe tied to allegations from a former staffer, further expanding the legal scrutiny surrounding the case.
The cumulative weight of these accusations has already produced immediate political consequences. Swalwell has withdrawn from California’s gubernatorial race and resigned from Congress, marking a swift collapse of his public career amid the controversy. Additional allegations from four other women, reported in the previous week, appear to have accelerated that unraveling.
Despite the mounting claims and ongoing investigations, Swalwell has denied the allegations. Since issuing those denials, he has largely disappeared from public view, leaving both supporters and critics watching closely as legal proceedings begin to take shape.
