Trump Pokes At Vance’s Socks

It was just another day in the Trump White House—an official meeting filled with serious diplomacy, critical international relations… and, of course, a little bit of lighthearted roasting. Because what’s a meeting between world leaders without a good-natured jab at your own Vice President’s socks?

During an Oval Office sit-down with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, President Donald Trump momentarily lost focus—not over a pressing economic crisis or a major international dispute, but over JD Vance’s rather festive footwear. The Vice President showed up wearing cream-colored socks covered in little green shamrocks, and Trump simply couldn’t let it slide.

“I have to just, speak of inflation, I love these socks,” Trump said, pointing at Vance’s feet. “What’s with these socks?”

Now, if you’ve ever watched Trump in action, you know he has a knack for turning even the most minor detail into a moment. This was no different. He doubled down, adding, “I’m trying to stay focused, but I’m very impressed with the VP’s socks.” Vance, clearly enjoying the whole thing, burst into laughter, while Martin joined in, amused at the ribbing.

Turns out, Vance had a feeling this might happen. At a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast earlier that morning, he even joked about it. “The president is a very big fan of conservative dress,” he said, clearly aware that Trump tends to favor more traditional, no-nonsense attire. He went on to say that if Trump did call him out on the socks, Martin would have to defend him by insisting that they were a vital part of U.S.-Ireland relations. It looks like that moment arrived sooner than expected.

But as much fun as the sock saga was, it wasn’t the only laugh Trump got during the meeting. When a reporter—who must have had the question of the day—asked Martin how in the world he allowed Rosie O’Donnell to move to Ireland after Trump’s re-election, the president couldn’t contain himself.

Ireland, the reporter noted, is known for being full of happy, cheerful people. So why on earth would they allow O’Donnell—a longtime Trump nemesis—to take up residence there? “I think she is going to lower your happiness level,” the reporter quipped, leaving Martin visibly confused by the whole exchange.

“Thank you,” Trump responded, clearly enjoying the question. “I like that question.” Then, with his signature smirk, he turned to the Irish Prime Minister and asked, “Do you know you have Rosie O’Donnell? Do you know who she is?” And just to make sure Martin didn’t accidentally go looking her up, he added, “You’re better off not knowing.”

It was classic Trump—combining humor, sharp wit, and just the right amount of mischief to keep everyone on their toes. While the media loves to obsess over his every move, these unscripted moments remind us why he remains one of the most unpredictable and entertaining figures in politics. Even in the middle of a diplomatic meeting, he’s going to be himself. And if that means roasting his own VP’s socks or taking one last shot at Rosie O’Donnell? Well, that’s just part of the deal.
