On Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed an audience at the historic Acropolis citadel in Athens, Greece, urging a revitalization of Western civilization.
During his visit, the official unveiled a fresh counterterrorism partnership uniting the United States and Greece. This cooperative effort is designed to facilitate intelligence sharing and jointly combat terror threats throughout the region. Dylan Johnson, serving as the State Department’s assistant secretary for global public affairs, discussed the initiative with Fox News Digital. He explained that Rubio intended to urge both Americans and Europeans to participate in a significant revival of the Western spirit.
Johnson further noted that the address would point to ancient Greece as the initial complete manifestation of curiosity and courage. The objective remains to oppose decline and protect shared heritage from emerging dangers.
Marco Rubio with one of the greatest speeches by a Sec of State in decades:
“We are prepared to do this alone but it is our preference, and our hope, to do this together with you, our friends in Europe.
America was founded 250 years ago, but the roots began here on this continent long before. The men who settled and built the nation of my birth arrived on our shores carrying the memories, the traditions, and the Christian faith of our ancestors as a sacred inheritance, an unbreakable link between the old world and the new.
We are part of one civilization, Western civilization. We are bound to one another by the deepest bonds that nations could share, forged by centuries of shared history, Christian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry, and the sacrifices our forefathers made together for the common civilization to which we have now fallen heir.
And if at times we disagree, our disagreements come from our profound sense of concern about a Europe with which we are connected, not just economically, not just militarily. We are connected spiritually and we are connected culturally. We want Europe to be strong. We believe that Europe and the West must survive.”

Rubio highlighted the strategic significance of Greece on Wednesday, observing that the alliance is crucial as the globe encounters destabilizing events. During the Munich Security Conference held in Germany last February, Rubio delivered an address that received a standing ovation.
Speaking in Greece, Rubio described the five centuries leading up to the end of World War II. He stated that the West had spread globally, constructing “vast empires” throughout that era. He cautioned that following the conflict, Europe lay in ruins. He attributed the belief that West’s dominance was permanently over to “godless communist revolutions” within Europe.
Scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET (6:30 p.m. local time in Greece), the speech saw Rubio encourage allies across the West to face a new age of great-power competition in unison. Various observers argued that the address enhanced Rubio’s prospects for a 2028 presidential run. The comments traced the lineage from Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, to the establishment of America.
Rubio asserted that the future must be a robust path forward rather than a fading memory. Reports indicate that Rubio warned that excessive segments of our civilization have overlooked these vital traits.
