A security review of drones used by Britain’s Royal Navy has uncovered Chinese-made components inside their camera systems, prompting concerns about whether sensitive military information could have been exposed.
The Telegraph reported that cameras installed on K3 drones contained components originating in China and were capable of transmitting data there. The report raised particular concerns because the drones have operated near sensitive British military activities and personnel.
One source quoted by the newspaper described the discovery as a “major failure to check origins of components” and said confidence in the platform had been lost.
The manufacturer and Britain’s Ministry of Defense dispute that sensitive information was actually transmitted to China.

Kraken Technology Group, which produces the K3, acknowledged that some components inside third-party cameras originated outside Britain but said an investigation found no evidence of sensitive data leaving approved channels.
“We are aware that some third-party, NDAA-compliant cameras had a small number of components originating from outside the UK,” a Kraken representative said.
“After a full audit by both Kraken and the Royal Navy we are confident no sensitive information has ever been shared outside of intended channels and any potential vulnerabilities have been identified and closed.”
According to Defense Express, internet connectivity available to the cameras was shut down immediately after the potential vulnerability was discovered.
The Ministry of Defense said the issue emerged during a “routine cyber vulnerability assessment.”
“A thorough investigation found no evidence of MOD data or systems being accessed, compromised or transmitted externally,” a ministry representative said, according to Newsweek.
“The first duty of government is national security, and we take the security of our equipment, networks and data extremely seriously.”

That leaves an important distinction at the center of the controversy: reports have raised concerns about the equipment’s capability to transmit information, while the government and manufacturer maintain that their investigation found no evidence sensitive British military data was actually sent to China.
The mere presence of Chinese-origin components in equipment operating around sensitive military activities has nevertheless generated political criticism.
Shadow Security Minister Alicia Kearns argued that Britain should know exactly what is inside equipment used by its armed forces.
“If we cannot say with confidence what is inside our own military equipment, we cannot say it is ours, or that we are sovereign,” Kearns said, according to GB News.
She was particularly concerned about cameras potentially capturing British special forces personnel and activities.

“When cameras built on Chinese parts are found recording our special forces — their faces, training and operations — we should not be surprised, we should be furious that we still haven’t woken up to the realities of the threat we face,” Kearns said.
The incident illustrates a persistent security problem facing Western militaries: sophisticated defense platforms can depend on long international supply chains containing commercially sourced electronics from numerous manufacturers.
A drone may be designed and assembled by a British company while individual cameras, processors or other electronic components originate elsewhere.
That makes supply-chain auditing particularly important when equipment is capable of recording military personnel, locations or operations. A vulnerability in a seemingly ordinary camera component can create a security concern even when the larger platform itself has not been compromised.
