CNN is preparing for another round of layoffs as it accelerates efforts to transition from a traditional television news operation into a digitally focused media company, according to individuals familiar with the plans.
Inside the network’s Hudson Yards headquarters, leadership under CEO Mark Thompson is continuing a broader restructuring initiative aimed at repositioning CNN for long-term sustainability in a rapidly shifting media landscape. While executives have promoted the network’s recently launched streaming service as successful, they have not released specific subscription figures, leaving its performance difficult to independently assess.
The internal assessment is clear: CNN’s current structure is still too heavily tied to its legacy television model. Leadership is pushing to rebalance the workforce by prioritizing roles centered on digital production, streaming, product development, and audience growth. Positions viewed as less aligned with that strategy are increasingly under scrutiny.
As part of that shift, the company is expected to cut a limited number of jobs this week. Sources indicate that the layoffs will likely affect only a few dozen employees out of a global workforce exceeding 3,000. While not large in scale, the reductions are expected to target areas less directly connected to CNN’s digital expansion efforts.
The cuts come as part of a broader financial and strategic recalibration. Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, has committed significant funding—reportedly around 100 million dollars—toward digital initiatives.
At the same time, executives are under pressure to reduce costs within the traditional news operation to make room for new hires with specialized digital expertise.
CNN is not alone in facing these challenges. The decline of the cable television model has forced news organizations across the industry to rethink their business structures. As advertising and subscription revenues tied to linear television continue to erode, networks must simultaneously manage shrinking legacy income while investing in emerging platforms.
Thompson has begun reshaping CNN’s content strategy to reflect this shift. The network is experimenting with new formats, including short-form video and podcast-style presentations featuring prominent anchors. These changes are designed to appeal to digital audiences and diversify distribution channels beyond traditional broadcasts.
If a proposed merger involving Warner Bros. Discovery proceeds, industry observers expect potential consolidation between CNN and other major news operations. Such a move would likely result in deeper cost-cutting measures, particularly through the elimination of overlapping roles.
