A chaotic confrontation aboard a Southwest Airlines flight in Miami ended with a passenger arrested after he allegedly attacked an off-duty federal officer who was attempting to calm the situation.
The incident unfolded Friday afternoon as passengers were boarding a Denver-bound flight at Miami International Airport. According to reports and video obtained by NBC Miami, 32-year-old Marcial Martinez became disruptive shortly after stepping onto the aircraft, apparently during a heated argument with his wife.
Footage shows Martinez suddenly charging toward a man later identified as an off-duty officer with the U.S. Department of Energy. The officer had reportedly stepped in to help defuse the escalating dispute.
Martinez launched himself at the officer, wrapping his arms around the taller man’s waist in an apparent attempt to tackle him. Despite being pushed backward by the sudden impact, the officer managed to maintain his balance while Martinez continued shouting and struggling.
The situation quickly turned physical as the officer regained control of the encounter. Video shows him overpowering Martinez and pinning him against the aircraft wall, preventing further aggression while maintaining control of the situation.
Another angle of the footage appears to show the moments leading up to the confrontation. Martinez can be seen leaning around the officer and calling out to his wife, urging her to leave the plane with him. Meanwhile, the officer remained positioned between Martinez and the woman, seemingly acting as a barrier while quietly communicating with flight attendants about what was happening.
After several tense moments, Martinez appeared to back down, reportedly muttering an insult before turning and heading toward the aircraft exit.
Authorities later said Martinez had been behaving erratically from the moment he boarded the plane. According to the arrest report, the officer told police that Martinez had bloodshot eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol.
When questioned by authorities, Martinez reportedly claimed the incident was simply a domestic argument that escalated after the officer intervened.
Police arrested Martinez at the airport later that day. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and faces charges of battery and disorderly intoxication.
The identity and specific role of the Department of Energy officer involved in the incident have not been publicly disclosed. Southwest Airlines has not released additional details about whether the flight was delayed as a result of the confrontation.
