Johnson Holds Event To Discuss Shutdown

It was a textbook moment of narrative control. On Thursday, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson began spelling out, in real time, that Democrats had tied illegal alien healthcare funding into their government shutdown demands. He was about to give viewers the unvarnished version of the Democrats’ “ransom note.” But on cue, both CNN and MSNBC slammed on the brakes — cutting away mid-sentence so their anchors could “fact check” him before their audiences could actually hear the accusation.

To anyone watching, the message was unmistakable: don’t let the peasants hear the raw truth — filter it through us first.

On social media, posters immediately called for the FCC to step in. But there’s a hard truth about that, too. The Federal Communications Commission has virtually no power over cable news content. Unlike broadcast networks, which use public airwaves and are subject to certain regulations, cable channels like CNN and MSNBC are private distributors operating under much lighter rules. Outside of very narrow issues like indecency or technical licensing, the FCC can’t touch them.

So yes, when CNN and MSNBC cut off a sitting Speaker of the House to protect Democrats from a damaging sound bite, it’s infuriating — but it’s also legal. And it’s not new. The mainstream press has spent years perfecting a kind of “information laundering” — letting Democrats and their surrogates speak freely, while muting or recontextualizing Republican criticisms before viewers can make up their own minds.

The Democrats’ actual position is no secret. Every major Democratic presidential candidate since at least 2019 — from Joe Biden to Kamala Harris to Elizabeth Warren — has pledged taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants. Maxine Waters even confirmed the push in the run-up to this shutdown fight. So Speaker Johnson’s claim wasn’t “false” — it was politically inconvenient.

But here’s the kicker: this strategy isn’t working anymore. Trust in the media is at an all-time low, with Gallup showing just 32% of Americans having “any” trust in newspapers and even less in television news. CNN and MSNBC’s ratings are circling the drain; more Americans see through the gatekeeping than ever before.

You can almost feel the desperation now — anchors jumping in mid-broadcast, “fact checks” delivered like fire drills, and pundits scrambling to smother any narrative that might resonate with voters. But no amount of damage control changes the underlying reality: when Americans hear “your tax dollars are paying for illegal immigrants’ healthcare,” they get angry. And angry voters don’t vote blue.
