Democrats campaigning in Pennsylvania accidentally offered the public a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the party is trying to rebuild its image ahead of the 2026 midterms — and the footage showed just how carefully scripted that effort has become.
The video, reportedly viewed by Fox News Digital, featured Pennsylvania Democratic candidate Bob Brooks alongside former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg during what appeared to be a staged campaign conversation. Before cameras rolled, an off-screen staffer coached the pair on messaging, emphasizing themes Democrats believe can reconnect them with voters who drifted away in recent elections.
“Think about your audience,” the staffer instructed. “Why is this race so important? We need to win the House — all of that. Winning over people who feel like they’re left behind by the party, flipping the district. Showing up for working people, affordability.”
The clip unintentionally revealed the party’s broader strategy heading into the midterms: appear authentic, focus relentlessly on affordability, and convince working-class voters Democrats understand their frustrations after major losses in 2024.
The awkwardness of trying to manufacture spontaneity became obvious almost immediately.
“We are going to have a really normal conversation with three cameras pointing at you,” the staffer joked.
“Everybody act normal,” Buttigieg laughed in response.
Then came perhaps the most telling moment of the exchange.
“And remind me the district number we’re in?” Buttigieg asked before the conversation started.
Not exactly the polished image Democrats were probably hoping to project in one of the most competitive congressional battlegrounds in the country.
The staffer even gave guidance on how to position beer cans placed nearby as visual props for the interview — another reminder of how heavily modern campaigns stage supposedly organic moments designed to appeal to ordinary voters.
Brooks, a firefighter running in a crowded Democratic primary, has attracted support from major figures across the party, including Buttigieg, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. He is backed by The Bench, a Democratic campaign organization run by veteran operatives that focuses on recruiting candidates they describe as “community-rooted” and capable of connecting with voters across party lines.
Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District remains one of the nation’s most closely watched battlegrounds. The Cook Political Report currently rates the race as a toss-up, making it one of only a small handful of truly competitive House contests heading into 2026.
The leaked footage also highlighted how much Democratic strategists believe image and tone matter after the party’s struggles with working-class voters over the last several election cycles. The emphasis on affordability, “showing up” for regular people, and avoiding overly polished political messaging suggests Democrats recognize that many voters increasingly see them as disconnected, managerial, and scripted.
Ironically, the video itself may reinforce exactly that perception.
Even while insisting the conversation should feel natural, staffers repeatedly coached both men on how to frame the discussion and what themes to emphasize.
“Bob, feel free to prompt Pete with a question,” the staffer advised. “We will interject if needed to do a little directing, but we’re going to be mostly hands-off.”
Mostly hands-off, apparently, except for the scripting, camera setup, messaging guidance, district reminders, and strategically placed beer cans.
