Jim Acosta has officially crossed into territory that makes even the most overproduced cable news stunts look tame.
The former CNN host — who made his career clashing with Donald Trump in the White House briefing room — just aired what he’s calling a “one of a kind interview.” And he’s not wrong. It was with Joaquin Oliver… the 17-year-old victim of the 2018 Parkland school shooting. Except, of course, it wasn’t.
It was an AI-generated version of Oliver, created by his parents to push a “powerful message on gun violence,” according to Acosta.
Yes, you read that right. A dead teenager, recreated by artificial intelligence, being “interviewed” about policy solutions and personal interests like he’s alive and well.
Acosta hyped the interview on social media, urging his followers to tune in for this “show you don’t want to miss.” And then, in his Substack and YouTube segments, he proceeded to ask the AI simulacrum of a murdered teenager what it thought about gun control, mental health, and “creating a culture of kindness.”
The AI dutifully delivered its pre-programmed talking points: “I believe in a mix of stronger gun control laws, mental health support, and community engagement,” it said.
Acosta didn’t stop at policy. He pivoted into hobbies. Movies. Sports. The virtual Joaquin Oliver told him he loved basketball, supported the Miami Heat, admired LeBron James, and enjoyed Remember the Titans. He even tossed in some Star Wars wisdom about Luke Skywalker and Yoda for good measure: “They both show that anyone can rise to greatness no matter where they start.”
Here’s the problem: Joaquin Oliver isn’t here to give his thoughts on any of this. He was murdered in one of the most horrific school shootings in American history. What Acosta did wasn’t journalism. It was digital puppeteering.
And let’s not pretend this isn’t political. The whole production was a springboard for a gun-control narrative. But instead of interviewing advocates, experts, or even Oliver’s grieving parents, Acosta chose to “interview” an algorithmic ghost.
