The plan was simple. A soccer team wins a big game. They wave a flag. The crowd cheers. That was the plan.
The reality is far different. Argentina was formally charged by FIFA for displaying a political banner during the World Cup. This happened right after they beat England in the semi-final. The players stood in front of a sign. It said the Falklands belong to them.
FIFA doesn’t allow politics on the field. The rule is strict. The governing body started its own case this week. The charge came after Argentina lost the final to Spain. According to Breitbart, the group said using a sports event for non-sporting shows is a breach of the code.
Here is the thing: the sequence matters more than the outrage.
The banner carried a specific message. It read, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas.” The statement translates to “The Malvinas (the Argentinian term for the Falkland Islands) are Argentine.”
The history here is deep and old. British rule has governed the islands for 193 years. English explorers landed there a century before Argentina was even an independent state. There wasn’t a permanent population until the British arrived.
In 2013, the people on the islands voted. Roughly 98 percent of current residents wanted to stay part of the United Kingdom. This was a clear choice by the locals. Yet the Argentine players waved the flag anyway. (The vote count was 98 percent, a number that stands firm regardless of the banner).
Why wave it if the data says no?
Argentina has shown no remorse for this act. The country’s prime minister, Javier Milei, defended his players after the game. He said Argentina will take the islands back through diplomatic means.
This isn’t the first time this has happened. A comparable banner led to a £20,000 penalty for Argentina imposed by FIFA in 2014. That time, players held it up before a friendly match against Slovenia. Now, the stakes are much higher.
FIFA said the respondents have been given a chance to speak. “In accordance with the Fifa Disciplinary Code, the respondents have now been provided with the opportunity to present their position, following which a decision will be issued by the Fifa Disciplinary Committee in due course,” FIFA said.
