Ed Sheeran Caves: The ‘Free Palestine’ Myth Exposed

Protesters flooded Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field last weekend to chant slogans at Ed Sheeran’s concert. The rapper had been dropped from the tour just days prior after NFL owner Robert Kraft intervened. Kraft told Sheeran that keeping Macklemore on the bill meant losing the stadium venue entirely. Sheeran admitted he made difficult decisions and apologized for disappointing his fans. He chose to bow to the pressure instead of standing firm on the facts.

Sheeran stepped to the microphone before his set to address the growing controversy directly. He told the crowd, according to RedState, “I’m not surprised that this week’s criticism was about something much more important.” The musician also stated that “What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable.” He claimed he could no longer hide his feelings about the humanitarian crisis.

This statement came after several other acts, including Finneas and Lukas Graham, quit the tour in protest. They cited Macklemore’s removal as the reason for their own departure.

While the crowd chanted “Free Palestine,” the land in question has never been a sovereign nation. There has never been a Palestinian state with a government, a constitution, or recognized borders. The area passed from the Ottoman Empire to British control before a 1947 partition plan failed. Arab nations rejected the plan and chose war instead of accepting the proposed borders.

From 1948 to 1967, Jordan controlled the West Bank and Egypt ran Gaza. Neither country ever tried to create a Palestinian state during their nineteen years of rule. The Palestinian Authority holds only observer status at the United Nations today because full statehood never existed.

In contrast, the land holds a documented record of Jewish sovereignty stretching back 3,000 years. The Kingdoms of Israel and Judah ruled the area before the modern state was formed. The modern State of Israel was re-established in 1948 and recognized almost immediately by the world. This history includes four distinct eras of Jewish rule on the same soil activists now claim to “free.” The documentary record for this history is longer than most nations can produce for their own founding. This is not propaganda but a matter of archaeology and ancient text.

Sheeran tried to explain his position by saying, “I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind.” He added that he wants his music to be about unity rather than division. Yet he proceeded to take a side on a complex geopolitical issue he admitted he did not fully understand. He told the audience, “I am already speaking to people across the spectrum to work out how to make a contribution.” He also noted that he is “listening and learning because I do not know enough.” This admission undermines his authority to make sweeping judgments about the conflict.
