Former FBI Director James Comey broke his silence Sunday night in an emotional and sharply worded video, condemning President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice following the sudden firing of his daughter, Maurene Comey, from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York (SDNY).
Maurene Comey, a longtime federal prosecutor who handled several high-profile cases, was dismissed last Wednesday. No official reason for the termination was provided, according to anonymous sources cited by the Associated Press. Her dismissal follows broader DOJ shakeups under Attorney General Pam Bondi, including the removal of prosecutors linked to prior investigations involving Trump.
While Maurene Comey did not name the president directly in her farewell message, she issued a veiled rebuke of the administration. “Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought,” she wrote in a message circulated to colleagues after her firing.
James Comey posted a five-minute video on his Substack platform where he read aloud his daughter’s letter and delivered a pointed critique of the Trump administration, characterizing the current DOJ leadership as politically compromised.
He reiterated a metaphor he coined during his tenure as U.S. Attorney: the Justice Department, he said, relies on a “reservoir of trust and credibility” that is filled slowly over time through integrity and sacrifice—but can be drained quickly through corruption or political interference.
Comey emphasized that Maurene had served with distinction and a commitment to impartial justice: “She became a star there, holding the powerful accountable.”
The core of Maurene’s letter focused on the erosion of confidence inside the Justice Department. She warned that firing a career prosecutor “without reason” risks instilling fear within those who remain. “Fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain,” she wrote. “Do not let that happen.”
Comey closed the video with a direct attack on Trump and his appointees. “Trump and the hacks who lead the Department of Justice are hammering at the dam day after day,” he said, warning that DOJ’s institutional integrity is “in grave danger.”
While the Justice Department has not issued an official explanation for the firing, the decision has drawn attention given Maurene Comey’s involvement in sensitive cases and her familial connection to one of Trump’s most vocal critics. The move follows a broader pattern of personnel changes at DOJ, including the removal of prosecutors tied to past investigations of Trump and his allies.
