President Trump secured permanent U.S. military control over Greenland without buying the land itself. This surprising outcome ended months of tension between Washington and Copenhagen. The agreement grants the United States the right to build new bases without asking for permission again. Fox News reported the three leaders will sign the pact on Tuesday at the U.N. General Assembly.
Within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland continues to function as a self-governing territory. Copenhagen keeps authority over foreign policy and defense while Greenland handles its own domestic affairs. Associated Press noted the deal applies even if Greenland eventually chooses independence. This structure allows the U.S. to secure the Arctic without the political headache of annexing a foreign land.
Trump announced the agreement last Friday on his social media platform. He declared that the agreement provides the U.S. with “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns. According to ABC News, a State Department official stated the pact “explicitly guarantees the United States the complete ability to do what it deems is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the American continent.
The agreement blocks foreign adversaries from making sensitive investments in the region. ABC News noted that “only the U.S. and our allies can make sensitive investments in Greenland, eliminating the previous status quo in which adversaries have been investing in Greenland’s sensitive sectors without investment screening.” This stops China and other rivals from gaining a foothold near vital shipping routes.
Previous attempts to buy the island caused diplomatic friction. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the idea of a sale “an absurd discussion.” ABC News quoted Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Bourup Egede, who said “we are not for sale and will never be for sale.” Trump’s threats to use military force strained relations within NATO. Now, the deal moves forward with full cooperation from all parties.
The U.S. now has a clear path to expand its presence in the Arctic. About two-thirds of Greenland sits inside the Arctic Circle where melting ice opens new shipping lanes. Associated Press noted these routes are becoming increasingly important for global trade and military movement. Washington may now create extra military bases under the new pact without needing distinct approval from Denmark or Greenland.
Trump has pushed for this control since 2019. In his second term, he revived this interest by asserting that “the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” ABC News documented a timeline where Vice President JD Vance visited the U.S. Pituffik Space Base in March 2025. He accused Denmark of underinvesting in the island’s security at that time.
Leaders from all three nations will meet Tuesday morning for the signing ceremony. Fox News confirmed Trump, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Prime Minister Jens-Frederick Nielsen will attend. This marks the end of a long fight over who controls the region’s future. The U.S. got the security it needed without the cost of buying the territory.
Trump called the deal “tremendous for Europe and for the United States and for everybody” just before signing. Associated Press added that he told the group, “And for Greenland, it’s going to be incredible. The deal falls short of the territorial acquisition Trump pursued for much of the year. Fox News verified that while sovereignty remains unaltered, the deal grants Washington expanded and permanent security rights. This pragmatic solution protects American interests while respecting local laws. The U.S. now holds the keys to the Arctic without the burden of ownership.
