Trump Responds To Birthright Citizenship Ruling

The Supreme Court dealt a blow to President Trump’s efforts to limit birthright citizenship, but he’s not backing down. In a tweet, Trump declared, “The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country, but we can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation…”

Supreme Court Rejects Trump’s Executive Order

The Supreme Court ruled against Trump’s executive order to restrict birthright citizenship in a 6-3 decision. According to ABC News, the ruling upheld the practice as protected by the 14th Amendment. This setback means that children born on U.S. soil will continue to receive citizenship, regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

Justice Kavanaugh Suggests Legislative Path

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in his opinion, noted that while Trump’s order violated federal law, it did not breach the Constitution. He suggested that “Congress could… amend [existing law] or otherwise enact new legislation establishing exceptions to birthright citizenship…” This opens the door for legislative action, which Trump is now pushing for.

Legislative Efforts Gain Momentum

Rep. Brian Babin and Sen. Lindsey Graham have already introduced bills aimed at redefining birthright citizenship without amending the Constitution. According to NBC News, these bills aim to change existing laws to exclude children of non-citizens and non-permanent residents from automatic citizenship. While the legislative path is challenging, it represents a significant shift in strategy for Trump and his allies.

This issue hits close to home for many Americans concerned about the impact of immigration on our communities and families. It’s a reminder that the fight for our values and the integrity of our nation’s laws is far from over. What do you think? Should Congress take action to change birthright citizenship?
