Trump Freezes Funds To University Of Maine

Here we go again—Democrats throwing a fit because President Trump actually meant what he said. Imagine that. Back in February, Maine’s Democrat Governor Janet Mills got a front-row seat to Trump’s no-nonsense approach when he told her, point-blank, that if she didn’t comply with his executive order barring men from competing in women’s sports, there would be consequences. And on Monday, she found out the hard way that those weren’t just empty words.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) put a freeze on funding to the University of Maine System, cutting off a critical money pipeline over the school’s refusal to follow Title IX protections as they were actually intended—to protect female athletes. University officials confirmed they received an email from the USDA’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer, telling them that all payments and funding authorizations were on pause while the department reviewed the school’s compliance with federal law. Turns out, the university’s determination to allow men to compete against women might come with a hefty price tag—almost $30 million in USDA funding was on the line last year alone.

And before anyone tries to claim that Trump is somehow “singling out” Maine, let’s not forget what just happened at Columbia University. The administration yanked a whopping $400 million in federal funding from the Ivy League institution after their leadership allowed antisemitic and pro-jihadi violence to run rampant on campus. This isn’t about targeting one school; this is about restoring sanity and holding institutions accountable when they refuse to do the right thing.

Of course, the usual suspects are already crying foul. Independent Maine Senator Angus King (who votes like a Democrat 95% of the time) is deeply concerned that the funding freeze will hurt Maine’s economy. He issued a dramatic statement warning that the decision could impact agricultural research, the workforce, small businesses, and even supply chain resiliency. Here’s an idea, Senator—maybe if your state prioritized the basic rights of female athletes over progressive social experiments, you wouldn’t be in this position.

And then, as expected, the ACLU swooped in with their usual nonsense. Zachary Heiden, chief counsel for the ACLU of Maine, actually had the audacity to claim that withholding federal funds somehow violates the University of Maine’s “right to academic freedom.” Really? Since when is forcing schools to let biological men dominate women’s sports an issue of academic freedom? This isn’t about what the university teaches—this is about making sure women and girls can compete safely and fairly. That shouldn’t be controversial.

But controversy is exactly what the Left thrives on, even when it puts them at odds with the vast majority of Americans. Poll after poll shows that roughly 80 percent of the public believes men should not be competing against women. This isn’t a fringe conservative stance—it’s common sense. And yet, Democrats are so deeply entrenched in their radical agenda that they’d rather fight to keep boys in girls’ sports than admit they’ve completely lost the argument.

At this point, let them keep digging their own hole. If Mills, King, and the rest of the Left want to double down on policies that enrage everyday Americans, they’re more than welcome to do so. That strategy worked out fantastically for them in the last election, right? Keep it up, Democrats—nothing helps Trump win elections like watching you trip over yourselves trying to defend the indefensible.
