The debate over transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports has resurfaced in California after reports that a high school track athlete who identifies as female has recorded a string of victories in girls’ events.
According to a report from Reduxx, Jaylin Liu, the sibling of Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Alysa Liu, began competing in girls’ track and field during the 2025 outdoor season after identifying as female. The report states that Liu has competed for both Albany High School and El Cerrito High School.
Reduxx reported that Liu won eight first-place finishes during the season while competing for Albany High School. Those performances included a silver medal in the 400-meter race at the North Coast Section Bayshore Championship and a gold medal in the 200-meter race at the 2025 Tri-County Athletic League Frosh-Soph Championship.

According to the report, Liu also finished first in every girls’ 200-meter and 400-meter race entered during the season, including a victory at the Tri-County Athletic League Finals on May 8. The publication further reported that Liu ranks as the fastest competitor in those events on the school team and leads the Tri-County Athletic League in the 400 meters.
The results have renewed debate over policies governing participation in girls’ athletics, an issue that has become a flashpoint in schools, legislatures, and courts across the country.
Supporters of allowing transgender athletes to compete according to their gender identity argue that participation policies should be inclusive and recognize transgender students. Opponents contend that biological differences can provide competitive advantages in certain sports and that girls’ athletic competitions should remain limited to biological females.
The legal landscape surrounding the issue has also continued to evolve.
As previously reported by Breitbart News, the U.S. Supreme Court recently addressed questions involving Title IX and biological sex. According to the outlet, the Court concluded that the term “sex” in Title IX, the Javits Amendment, and related regulations refers to biological sex.
“The term ‘sex’ in Title IX, the Javits Amendment, and the Title IX regulations cannot plausibly be interpreted to refer to anything other than biological sex,” the decision stated.
The ruling has been viewed by supporters as reinforcing the authority of schools and governments to distinguish between biological males and biological females in certain circumstances, including athletics. Critics of such policies argue they could limit opportunities for transgender students and conflict with protections based on gender identity.
