The House of Representatives voted late Tuesday to force President Trump to end fighting with Iran. Seven Republican lawmakers departed from the White House stance to back this initiative. They wanted to stop the conflict without waiting for more approval. The final count was 220 to 204. This marks the third time the House has approved such a measure since June.
Neither of the two earlier votes reached the President’s desk for a likely veto. But this time, the message is clear. The House wants the war to end now. Seven GOP members sided with Democrats to demand an immediate halt to hostilities.
The seven Republicans who supported the resolution come from different states. They include Tom Barrett of Michigan and Warren Davidson of Ohio. Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania and Nancy Mace from South Carolina also voted yes. Thomas Massie of Kentucky led the charge by introducing a separate resolution to impeach War Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier that day. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn, both from Iowa, completed the list.
Eight other GOP legislators were absent from the vote on Tuesday. This was likely the last congressional action on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections. The split in the party shows deep tension over how long the fighting should last.
The price tag for this conflict is rising fast. The Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday that the war has cost more than $38 billion as of August 1. They project the cost will be between $2 billion and $3 billion every month. This depends on how intense the fighting gets.
By 2027, the CBO also forecasted inflation would exceed expectations by 0.5 percentage points. Americans are already struggling with high prices. The conflict has disrupted global oil supplies. This has led to record-high costs for diesel fuel.
Rep. Seth Moulton, a Marine veteran, asked a sharp question during the debate. Recall when Donald Trump claimed the war would endure only a few weeks. he said. He insisted Congress “actually ask tough questions, as the Constitution directs us to do, rather than be subservient to another warmongering administration.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters earlier Tuesday that the war is entering a “new phase.” He believes US allies are stepping up to help stabilize the Middle East. He stated that once this occurs, according to the New York Post, “you’re going to see, as the president said, anytime gas prices will go down again, the cost of groceries will as well.”
Johnson said President Trump expects this shift to happen after the election. But the Speaker added his own wish for a faster resolution. “I’d love it to happen today,” Johnson said. Vice President JD Vance agreed in an interview, stating the war would conclude “right after” the midterms.
