The controversy surrounding White House aide Natalie Harp took an unusually personal turn Tuesday night when CNN’s Erin Burnett interviewed Harp’s own brother about his sister’s relationship with President Donald Trump.
Preston Harp appeared for a roughly ten-minute segment and discussed what he characterized as his sister’s “obsession” with Trump, including an incident CNN reported occurred in October 2023.
Burnett said CNN had spoken with two sources about what happened as Trump’s motorcade was preparing to leave Trump Tower for a court appearance.
According to Burnett’s account, there was disagreement over who would ride in which vehicle, and no regular seat remained for Natalie Harp. Harp reportedly maintained that Trump had personally asked her to accompany him.
“According to these sources, the end result is that your sister jumped into the trunk of one of the motorcade vehicles,” Burnett told Preston Harp.
He laughed and responded, “That’s funny, I didn’t even know about that.”
Burnett then asked what he made of the story.
“That’s actually kind of sad,” he replied. “That’s obsession. That’s like an unhealthy obsession with someone if you’re going to jump into the trunk of their car.”
But the terminology surrounding the alleged incident raises an obvious question about what actually happened.
While Burnett repeatedly described Harp as getting into a “trunk” during the television segment, her social-media promotion reportedly identified the vehicle as an SUV. Most SUVs do not have a separate enclosed trunk like a conventional sedan. Instead, the rear cargo compartment is generally open to the passenger compartment and accessed through a hatch.
That distinction does not establish exactly where Harp sat or whether CNN’s underlying account of the incident is accurate. But “jumped into the trunk” can create a considerably different mental picture from riding in an SUV’s rear cargo area.
And without additional details, the incident itself says little about Harp’s relationship with Trump.
If Trump had indeed personally requested that an aide accompany him to a court appearance, an aide finding an unconventional way into an already crowded motorcade vehicle could have explanations considerably less sensational than an “unhealthy obsession.”
CNN’s sources, as described by Burnett, provided an account of Harp’s actions. Preston Harp then supplied his own interpretation of those actions. Those are two different things.
The segment comes as Natalie Harp has received increased attention over her proximity to Trump.
Sen. Jon Ossoff, a Georgia Democrat, has publicly raised questions concerning Harp and Trump, helping move a previously little-known aide into a much larger political and media controversy. Allegations and insinuations about the nature of their relationship should not, however, be treated as established fact without supporting evidence.
Tuesday’s interview moved the story beyond workplace conduct or political questions and directly into Harp’s family.
CNN did not merely interview a critic, former colleague or political opponent. It put Harp’s brother on national television and asked him to interpret anecdotes about his sister’s behavior.
Preston Harp was willing to do it.
That produced the night’s most uncomfortable spectacle. He openly laughed about the motorcade story before characterizing his sister’s reported conduct as evidence of an unhealthy fixation.
