Longtime Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was met with a chorus of boos and chants of “retire” and “ditch Mitch” during his speech at the Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky over the weekend.
Throughout his five-minute address, McConnell maintained a stoic expression as people jeered, “lost the senate,” “retire,” and “ditch Mitch.”
The 81-year-old senator drew attention as he recently froze during a press conference, with aides quickly escorting him away. McConnell has a history of falls and in the past sustain a concussion and a cracked rib. And just last month, he fell while disembarking a plane.
President Donald Trump recently said that McConnell should retire if he’s not doing well and focus on his health. “No, we have to have that. We have some people in the Senate that are fantastic and would be great at that position. But it’s just amazing he [McConnell] would do that — but at the same time, I hope he’s well,” said Trump to Breitbart News.
So far, there have been no indications from McConnell that he is considering retirement and the chants of retirement are unlikely to change that. In fact, McConnell has stated that he plans to continue in the Senate and even run for reelection in 2022.
McConnell’s speech focused on the accomplishments that he, and the Republican Party, have achieved under President Trump’s administration, and the progress that has been made on cutting taxes, sharing the economic growth, lowering health care prices, and rethinking regulations.
However, at the end of the day, the focus was still on McConnell and his ailments, with people voicing their opinion that he should retire. Even though McConnell’s future remains unclear, one thing is certain – the calls for retirement will only continue.
