Mayor Discusses Car Controversy

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott is facing renewed scrutiny over both his use of taxpayer-funded transportation and his response to questions about it, a controversy that has quickly expanded beyond procurement procedures into accusations of deflection and political grievance.

The episode began with a Fox Baltimore report noting that Scott’s primary city-issued vehicle, a 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, carries a total project cost of $163,495, making it, according to the outlet’s reporting, the most expensive government-issued executive vehicle in the state of Maryland.

The report comes at an awkward time for Scott, a progressive mayor who has held office since 2020 and has frequently positioned himself as a reformer pushing back against entrenched political habits.

Baltimore entered 2025 facing an $85 million budget deficit, a fiscal backdrop that has sharpened public sensitivity to spending decisions, particularly those that appear symbolic or discretionary. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer, a luxury SUV with a fuel efficiency of roughly 14 miles per gallon, also sits uneasily alongside Scott’s public advocacy on climate issues.

When pressed by a reporter about the cost, Scott did not focus primarily on the procurement details. Instead, he compared the criticism to scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s armored “Beast” vehicle, argued that inflation was being ignored, and suggested that political motivations were driving the coverage.

As the exchange continued, Scott escalated his response, calling the question “idiotic” and accusing the reporter of advancing a “right-wing” effort with a “racist slant.” That remark, more than the vehicle itself, ignited a wave of social media backlash from conservative critics and political opponents.

The mayor’s office later issued a detailed statement defending the purchase. According to the spokesperson, the $163,495 figure represents the total project cost, not just the base price of the vehicle, and includes mandatory safety, security, and communications modifications required for use by the Baltimore Police Department’s Executive Protection Unit.

The office also noted that the city budgets for a new mayoral vehicle every four years due to heavy use, with older vehicles repurposed or sold to recover value. Officials further disputed the claim that Scott’s SUV is definitively the most expensive executive vehicle in the state, arguing that the reporting lacked comprehensive data across jurisdictions.
