On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris seemed to stumble while promoting President Biden’s extensive $20 billion green energy agenda, possibly indicating that the Biden administration wasn’t totally against population control as it relates to global warming. But was it a gaffe or a Freudian slip?
During a speech before a crowd of labor and civil rights leaders, in which she touted the sizable economic investment in green energy under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, Harris seemed to refer to population control when she said, “When we invest in clean energy and electric vehicles and reduce population, more of our children can breathe clean air and drink clean water.”

Harris quickly attempted to clarify her statement by referring to the official transcript posted on the White House website, which says that her intended statement was “reducing pollution,” not “reducing population.”
However, many environmental activists and climate scientists have long been pushing for population control in order to reduce the effects of anthropomorphic (human-caused) climate change. Even as far back as October 2021, the Hopkins-Bloomberg Public Health asked the question: “Is Population Control a Climate Change Solution?”
This isn’t the first time Harris has referred to population control in regards to climate change. At a campaign rally in August, she said, “One of the things that we know that is an underlying factor for why the impact of climate change is so devastating is the number of people who are living on the planet.”
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Harris misspoke during the speech and that her “reducing population” comment was the result of a gaffe. But given her past statements, is it possible that her comment was actually a Freudian slip?

Harris isn’t the only Democratic leader to push for population control. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made headlines in early April 2021 when she said, “Award-winning CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour, who brought attention to population growth as a way to mitigate climate change.”
The issue of population control is particularly problematic for Harris and the party she represents, since it’s seen as something that is generally imposed on the most vulnerable populations in order to “solve” global issues. Moreover, the idea of population control has been seen as a dark and ethically questionable practice since history has shown us the devastating effects of its implementation.
So was Vice President Kamala Harris’ comment a gaffe or a Freudian slip that unintentionally revealed the true views of the Biden administration on population control? Only time will tell. But it’s definitely an issue worth keeping an eye on.
