Johnson Makes Surprising Comments On DOGE

U.S. lawmakers are supporting the efforts of Tesla Ceo Elon Musk and his newly minted Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to uncover the misuse of taxpayer money.

According to the Daily Wire, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA.) said Monday that Republicans are supporting DOGE to make the U.S. government more efficient and to curb the gross spending of federal funds.

The Trump administration has recently been issued court orders instructing that DOGE should halt some of its activities.

A reporter asked Johnson if DOGE and the Trump administration should destroy some sensitive records that have been downloaded, to which Johnson replied that the Republican side of the aisle will remain “fully supportive of what the DOGE effort is going and what the president is doing.”

Johnson added that Trump made his campaign promises and plans to deliver them to his voters and said some of the information that has been uncovered by DOGE is “shocking.”

“It’s a very aggressive agenda that was promised to the voters. Remember, he’s delivering on campaign promises right now,” Johnson said. “We are going to be codifying a lot of these changes, and what they’ve uncovered is, frankly, shocking. There are a lot of expenditures of the federal government that Congress has not been aware of, in spite of our best efforts to do oversight, some of this has been hidden.”

Johnson said that the efforts put in by DOGE are similar to an outside audit, getting into the systems and finding excessive spending that has remained unknown for years.

“We are applauding that, this is what we have been wanting and trying to do for a long time,” Johnson said. “So, this is a good development. I wish the courts would allow the executive and the legislative branches to work, but we’ll see how all that develops.”

On Monday, Musk alleged the Biden administration, through FEMA, had spent around $59 million to house illegal migrants in luxury hotels in New York City.

“The @DOGE team just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants,” Musk wrote. “Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order. That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals! A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds,” Musk said in a post on X.
