Fox News Walks Away As Trump Media Ban Takes Effect

Fox News pulled out of the presidential news pool on Monday morning. This move leaves President Trump without any network television video coverage for his upcoming trip to the United Nations. Fox News D.C. Bureau Chief Bryan Boughton sent an email stopping the shared video feed effective that same day. The decision comes right after the White House barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the building.

The five major networks usually share one camera crew to save money and resources. Fox News, CNN, NBC, ABC, and CBS take turns being the “pool chair” each day. Monday was supposed to be CNN’s turn to provide the main video feed.

According to the Daily Wire, the White House has not yet responded to Fox News pulling out of the rotation. The President’s trip to the U.N. General Assembly will now go forward without a network crew filming the events.

President Trump announced the ban on Friday, citing what he called constant fake news reporting. On his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW … and Politico … from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS” The President accused these outlets of spreading “FICTION and LIES” about his administration.

Fox News Bureau Chief Bryan Boughton explained the reason for ending the pool coverage in a direct email. “This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” he stated. Boughton added that the move followed the White House position preventing CNN from doing its job. He confirmed, “There will be no replacement pool put in place,” per the Daily Wire.

According to Breitbart, this move prevents the President from having network-produced video of his events. The White House will still use its own crew to broadcast live on YouTube and social media. This method has been used throughout the administration for official events. Even though CNN was slated for the rotation on Monday, guidance indicated no main pool camera was scheduled.

The immediate result is a gap in traditional television coverage for the President’s public appearances. The White House press office guidance showed no primary pool camera for the ribbon cutting on the South Lawn at 1:45 p.m. Eastern. It also showed no camera for the trip to the U.N. General Assembly that followed. Breitbart states the President retains a group of reporters, such as photographers and print journalists, accompanying him.

Fox News has traditionally aligned with the Trump administration, making this a rare public rebuke. The move directly responds to the ban on three other news organizations. The White House has not issued a statement addressing Fox News’ decision to stop sharing video.
