Australia Lifts Import Ban

Australia has agreed to lift its remaining restrictions on U.S. beef imports in what the White House is calling a “major trade breakthrough” for American agriculture — and a significant win for the Trump administration.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s left-wing Labor government announced Thursday that longstanding limits on American beef, implemented two decades ago to protect against mad cow disease, will be fully removed. The move comes after months of pressure from President Donald Trump, who tied the issue to his administration’s broader push for “fair and reciprocal” trade.

Australia’s Agriculture Minister Julie Collins framed the decision as a step toward a more open market. “Australia stands for open and free trade — our cattle industry has significantly benefited from this,” she said in a statement.

The restrictions had prevented the import of U.S. beef sourced from cattle raised in Canada or Mexico, even though direct imports of American-raised beef have been permitted since 2019. The U.S. recently strengthened its traceability measures for North American cattle, allowing Australian regulators to accept the expanded imports.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins praised the move, crediting Trump for forcing a resolution.

“American farmers and ranchers produce the safest, healthiest beef in the world,” she said. “It’s absurd that non-scientific trade barriers prevented our beef from being sold to consumers in Australia for the last 20 years. Gone are the days of putting American farmers on the sidelines.”

The decision follows Trump’s announcement in April of sweeping tariffs on Australian imports, including a 10% duty on goods like beef and a 50% duty on steel and aluminum. At the time, Trump openly criticized Canberra for blocking U.S. beef while benefiting from its own $3 billion beef exports to the U.S.

“Australia bans — and they’re wonderful people, and wonderful everything — but they ban American beef,” Trump said in April. “Yet we imported $3 billion of Australian beef from them just last year alone. They won’t take any of our beef… but we’re doing the same thing right now.”

While Canberra has not yet set a timeline for the full removal of restrictions, the announcement signals a major reversal for Albanese’s government.
